Clearing a misconception and drawing a path forward.
Parents of students attending a School have the right to be represented in the Governing Board of a specific School.
In addition, the School Board (ex.: LBPSB) represents the right of ALL citizens, i.e.:- the General Public.
If you are NOT a parent of a school child, but you reside in an area served by the School Boards, YOU have the right as a citizen/taxpayer to have your concerns heard.
A large part of the General Public interprets School Board elections as an exercise in democracy that concern only the Parents of students attending schools. This is an unfortunate misconception that leads to anemic participation in School Board election.
Every adult living in the area has the right to have their say in the School Board in all areas: pedagogy, services offered to the community, availability of facilities, judicious use of tax dollars. The largest bulk of the electorate is effectively made of citizens who do not attend or have children attending the public schools in their area of residency. Everyone's ideas and concerns have the right to be counted. It is part of the laws governing the Public Schools of the Province. As a matter of fact, YOU as a member of the General Public have more rights and more control over the Public Schools than any parent whose children attend a private school could possibly exercise in a private school.
Dario’s Invitation
Dario invites you to think of a School Board as an integral part of a community. Only if we think of it as a focal point of the community can we reinvent it to achieve its full potential. If it is perceived as just as extra tax bill to the General Public, we will have failed to achieve the synergy the public school system can harness from the General Public. Thereby, we will have to resign ourselves to continue to witness a slow and painful decline of the Public Schools system that will lead to greater presence of costly private education. A change is required. Together we can bring it about.
